The learning cycles of the Montessori method

According to Montessori pedagogy, schooling takes place in 3-year cycles.

Sensory material

An essential element of Montessori pedagogy, sensory materials are the first materials that children handle, enabling them to absorb knowledge. By giving children time to handle the material, they become aware of the concept of sensory content. The aim is to invite them to focus their awareness on the quality of objects and on what defines them (shape, size, color, texture, temperature, etc.), and to explore the material on their own for as long as they wish. The material helps to develop the child's motor skills with a specific goal in mind: autonomy in life.

Practical life exercises, carried out with the help of sensory equipment, are real-life activities, activity motifs to enable the child to generate movement and enter into culturally-linked work. These exercises are decontextualized and adapted to the child's strength. They help to develop self-confidence and self-esteem, autonomy, independence, adaptability, logical thinking and concentration. Some activities, such as writing, reading and botany, indirectly prepare the child for a future skill. The child builds from the inside out, opening up to others, to the world, becoming more sociable and beginning to work collaboratively.
